Costas Spathis, Speed of Light, 2023 - Guy Hepner Editions

Costas Spathis’ Speed of Light (2023, Photography) transforms architectural space into a vision of abstraction and transcendence. The image, taken from the floor of a grand cathedral looking upward, distorts the vaulted ceiling into a sweeping cascade of lines, arches, and glowing surfaces that converge toward a radiant vanishing point.

The perspective elongates the vertical elements until they appear to rush upward, dissolving into pure light. The interplay of warm golds and cool grays enhances the sensation of velocity and immensity, making the structure feel less like stone and more like a living beam of energy. At the base, the presence of a massive pipe organ grounds the composition, reminding the viewer of the human craftsmanship behind the seemingly cosmic vision.

In Speed of Light, Spathis pushes the boundaries of architectural photography, collapsing the physical into the metaphysical. The cathedral becomes both sanctuary and spaceship, its Gothic symmetry reimagined as a tunnel into infinity. The work captures the essence of awe—where history, light, and geometry converge to evoke both spiritual transcendence and futuristic wonder.
