A dazzling array of blue, red, and pastel pink paint, accented with flecks of green, makes up ‘Keukenhof’, an unabashedly joyful composition. Named for Holland’s famous tulip garden, this vibrantly coloured print evokes images of flowers, packed so densely that they obscure the ground underneath.
‘Keukenhof’ is the final print from Damien Hirst’s ‘Veils’, published in 2020 and depicting details from his ‘Veil Paintings’ (2017) series. ‘Keukenhof’ combines Pierre Bonnard-like colours with a technique reminiscent of Pointillism, to enchanting and immersive effect. The artwork image is at once meditative and energetic, the short strokes of brightly coloured paint creating a sense of dynamism and movement, while the complex and abstract design invites a viewer to pause and consider more carefully the response it evokes in them.
The present artwork captures and replicates the colours, impact and textures of the original painting in superb detail. It also builds further on Hirst’s conception of the original series, adding another veil-like boundary between the viewer and the world within the composition.
