The Invisible Realm, Mint Summertime, 2022 - Guy Hepner Editions

The Invisible Realm's Mint Summertime (2022, Mixed Media Collage) transforms a quintessential mid-century poolside scene into a dreamscape where nostalgia and abstraction intertwine. At first glance, the composition recalls the idyllic postcard aesthetics of resort living: sunbathers lounge in deck chairs, swimmers gather around the turquoise pool, and palm trees sway against a pastel sky. Yet, the entire tableau is veiled by cascading vertical bands of color, creating a visual rhythm that both conceals and reveals.

These spectral stripes—ranging from mint greens and pale pinks to warm golds and deep browns—act as temporal disruptions, slicing through memory and destabilizing the stillness of the original scene. The effect is one of suspended reality, as though the viewer peers through refracted glass or into an alternate dimension where time has fragmented into pure color.

In Mint Summertime, The Invisible Realm highlights the tension between the polished ideal of leisure culture and the ephemeral, shifting nature of memory. The work seduces with its familiar imagery while simultaneously disorienting, suggesting that what we recall of “the good life” is always a mirage—layered, unstable, and endlessly reframed.
