Costas Spathis, Zero Gravity (Vol 3), 2023 - Guy Hepner Editions

Costas Spathis’ Zero Gravity (Vol 3) (2023, Photography) transforms a moment of collective leisure into a mesmerizing study of rhythm, abstraction, and surreal perspective. Shot from above, the image captures dozens of swimmers scattered across an expanse of impossibly blue water, their bodies frozen mid-motion as if suspended in air rather than afloat in the sea.

The overhead vantage point dissolves the familiar relationship between figure and ground, flattening depth into pattern. Each swimmer becomes a gestural mark within a larger composition, echoing brushstrokes across a vast monochrome canvas. The dense choreography of limbs, splashes, and torsos evokes both randomness and harmony, as though the group is unconsciously participating in a larger cosmic dance.

By stripping away horizon lines and spatial anchors, Spathis invites viewers to read the swimmers as weightless forms—caught between flight and floatation. In Zero Gravity (Vol 3), the sea itself becomes a stage for reimagining human movement, where ordinary recreation is elevated into a vision of suspended time, collective energy, and painterly abstraction.
