Against a white background variously coloured spots, from hot pink to a light blue that practically fades into the background, cover the visual field of Damien Hirst’s ‘Plaza’. Named for the iconic New York City hotel, this facsimile print is the sixth work from the ‘Colour Space’ (H5, 2018) series, which is derived from Hirst’s eponymous painting series from 2016. Breaking down the logic of his ‘Spot Paintings’ (begun in 1986), these works champion imperfection and chance.

The floating spots are dynamic and defy any sense of order, at times appearing to bounce into each other or overlap. This implied movement paired with their randomly allocated colours creates an intense sense of joy and energy. The formulation of life through chance is also apparent in the splatters of paint across the canvas, reminiscent of a Pollock-like action. Such liveliness comes through in the overall composition with unintentional swirling and circular patterns emerging.

Its spots enlarged, ‘Plaza’ seems to zoom in on a larger composition, offering the viewer a subsection for study. Here, the true degree of imperfection emerges – the spots slightly warped, the colours of some flawed and the paint ranging in thickness. As such, ‘Plaza’ deftly captures the texture of the original painting, adding another layer to its fantastically sensuous viewing experience.
