Damien Hirst’s H13-10, Blizzard (2024) is a dynamic fusion of seascape and abstraction, where the raw power of crashing waves collides with the frenetic energy of paint itself. Executed in monochrome, the work depicts the ocean in full storm, spray exploding across the canvas in a frenzy of movement. Layered over the hyper-detailed rendering of the sea are splatters and drips of paint, echoing Jackson Pollock’s action painting and collapsing the boundary between representation and gesture. The title, Blizzard, heightens this duality, suggesting both snow and sea, chaos and awe, nature and painterly invention. As part of Hirst’s recent exploration of the sublime, the painting captures the violent beauty of forces beyond human control, while simultaneously asserting the immediacy and materiality of painting itself.
