Damien Hirst’s H13-12, Doldrums (2024) is a striking interplay of representation and abstraction, where the fury of the sea collides with the chaos of paint. A dramatic black-and-white seascape, rendered with photographic precision, is overlaid with a flurry of splattered pigments - thick drips, looping trails, and scattered bursts of white and gray. The effect blurs boundaries: is it the ocean’s spray or the artist’s hand? The title, Doldrums, typically associated with stagnation and stillness, is deployed ironically here, as the canvas teems with relentless energy and motion. Part of Hirst’s evolving exploration of the sublime, this work fuses nature’s overwhelming force with the physicality of painting, evoking both the turbulence of the sea and the restless human drive to capture it.
